Hollywood legend Diane Keaton passed away on October 11 at the age of 79, following a rapid decline in her health. The Oscar-winning actress had battled various health issues throughout her life, including skin cancer and bulimia.
According to her death certificate, the primary cause of death was primary bacterial pneumonia. The certificate also confirmed that she would be cremated. Her family issued a statement expressing gratitude for the messages of support and requesting privacy.
A close friend revealed that Keaton's health deteriorated very suddenly in her final weeks. She had put her Los Angeles home on the market in March and had not been seen walking her dog for months, indicating her declining health.
Songwriter Carole Bayer Sager, a close friend and collaborator, said she saw Keaton two to three weeks before her death and was struck by how much weight she had lost. Keaton's home had also been damaged by California wildfires, forcing her to stay elsewhere.
Keaton had previously spoken about her battles with skin cancer and bulimia. She was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer, requiring two surgeries, and wrote about her eating disorder in her memoir.
Keaton rose to fame in The Godfather (1972) and won an Oscar for Annie Hall (1977). Her other notable films include The First Wives Club, Father of the Bride, and Baby Boom.
