Des Nealon, Star of Educating Rita, Dies at 90
Veteran Irish actor Des Nealon, best known for his role opposite Michael Caine and Julie Walters in the 1983 film Educating Rita, died in a hospice on Sunday, June 21, at the age of 90. No cause of death has been disclosed.
The news was confirmed in an Instagram post by the Abbey Theatre, where Nealon performed extensively over a career spanning more than six decades. The theatre paid tribute to the actor, describing him as "a true gentleman, gentle and generous in nature to all around him and ferociously good fun."
Seven-Decade Career Honoured
According to the Abbey Theatre, Nealon's association with the National Theatre of Ireland began in 1956 and continued until 2018, a remarkable 62-year history. He performed in a wide range of roles, moving seamlessly between classic plays and contemporary works. The theatre noted: "He was chameleon like, faultlessly moving between classic plays and new works, from mathematician to blind sightseer, peasant farmer to Scottish doctor, Roman philosopher to stationmaster and more particularly clergymen of every denomination. Every part played effortlessly with that warmly resonant voice so fondly remembered by all."
In a touching tribute, actor Andrew Bennett led a final ovation for Nealon after Monday night's performance of The Whiteheaded Boy at the Abbey Theatre.

Alongside his extensive stage work, Nealon enjoyed a successful screen career. His film credits include the Oscar-winning Educating Rita (1983), Roger Corman's Von Richthofen and Brown (1971), Dead Bodies (2003), The Flag (2016), and Dark Lies the Island (2019).
