Dawn French has said she is "not sure how to be" after the death of her publicist and close friend Neil Reading at the age of 56 following a short illness.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, the actress described Reading as her "press representative and fierce protector" who had worked with her for more than 30 years. She wrote: "This beautiful chap @neilreadingpr was my press representative and fierce protector. We worked together to promote work stuff for 30 odd years or more.. but along the way, we forged a profound friendship, based on trust & respect."
French added that Reading was "there for me and my family in many tricky moments" and helped her "in ways I will never forget".
A career at the heart of showbiz
Neil Reading was one of Britain's best-known showbiz publicists, representing stars including John Cleese, Victoria Wood, John Bishop, Sir Lenny Henry and Paul McKenna. He founded Neil Reading PR in 1992, building it into a formidable entertainment, consumer and lifestyle PR operation.
His agency was behind a string of West End hits, including High Society, Only Fools And Horses and Fawlty Towers – The Play. The company later expanded into business, property and fashion, forging links with agencies across Europe and the United States.
Tributes and legacy
Reading's sudden death has prompted an outpouring of grief from celebrities whose careers he helped champion. French's tribute highlighted his love for his family, writing: "We never EVER had a conversation either on the phone or in person, that didn't include his utter love for his beautiful wife and beloved daughter. NOTHING mattered more, and he constantly reminded me about what really counts."
She concluded: "I can't quite believe I'm referring to him in the past. Not sure how to be without him. Heartbroken. Bye Neil. You darlin man…"
Reading is survived by his wife Claire and daughter Rosa.
