Davina McCall: 'I wasn't terrified of dying, but I didn't want to leave my kids'

Davina McCall has spoken about the brain tumour that nearly killed her, describing how a routine health screening uncovered a large colloid cyst that could have been fatal if left untreated. The 57-year-old TV presenter, known for her fitness and healthy lifestyle, underwent surgery in 2023 to remove the benign but life-threatening growth.

McCall, who previously struggled with addiction to alcohol and heroin, said she initially dismissed the idea of a health check, believing herself to be 'the healthiest woman you've ever met'. The screening was arranged after a friend, gynaecologist Dame Lesley Regan, suggested it in exchange for a talk on menopause.

The cyst, which McCall nicknamed 'Jeffrey', measured 14mm – significantly larger than the 10mm threshold for a 'big' colloid cyst. Despite being told the growth was benign, surgeons warned it could eventually kill her if left untreated. McCall admitted she almost refused the operation, but was persuaded after consulting a specialist in the US.

Reflecting on her experience, McCall said she was not terrified of dying but was concerned about leaving her three children. She is now fully recovered and has re-evaluated her priorities. The former Big Brother presenter continues to advocate for health awareness, drawing on her own journey from addiction to fitness.
