David Tennant and his wife Georgia Moffett have formally changed their surname to Tennant for their business, Sandyboy Limited, with the update registered at Companies House on New Year's Day 2026. The couple, married for 14 years, made the move to align their legal names with David's well-known stage surname.
David, born David McDonald, adopted 'Tennant' as a stage name after drama school when the actors' union Equity informed him that 'David McDonald' was already taken. He chose the name after reading an article about Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant. Despite using it professionally for decades, he only legally changed his name in 2013, alongside Georgia and their eldest two children.
The couple met on the set of Doctor Who in 2008, where Georgia played David's on-screen daughter Jenny. They have five children: Ty (23), Olive (14), Wilfred (12), Doris (10), and Birdie (6). Their eldest daughter Olive will star alongside David in the upcoming series of Rivals, a Disney+ adaptation of Jilly Cooper's novel.
David revealed in 2023 that he legally changed his surname to avoid confusion with a US actor named David Tennant. He said, 'If it was your legal name then you don’t have to change it, so I had to make it my legal name. We all changed our names at once. The four of us became Tennants in a two-week period.'
