Danny Dyer has disclosed that his wife Joanne Mas manages all their finances, following her decision to drain their joint account and evict him from their home in 2000 after she discovered his infidelity. The actor made the admission on the ITV programme The Assembly, where he was interviewed by a group of autistic, neurodivergent and learning disabled people.
Dyer, 47, met Mas when they were 13, and she was the breadwinner as a financial advisor before his acting career took off. Despite multiple breakups and cheating allegations, the couple remain together. During the interview, when asked by a participant named Chardonnay if they still share a bank account, Dyer replied: 'She controls everything now.'
He admitted to past behaviour that led to his eviction: 'Yes, she did kick me out because I was a p***k and she deserved better. Sometimes I would go out and get off my head, take drugs, and I wouldn’t come home for three days.' He acknowledged that Mas 'had every right to throw me out.'
The actor also credited therapy with helping him cope with grief and the pressures of fame. He noted that 'every strong male role model I had either left me or died,' including his father, grandfather, and playwright Harold Pinter. Dyer revealed he developed a damaging coping mechanism: 'Whenever I got close to somebody who I loved and I looked up to I’d press the ‘f*** it’ button before they could die.'
Dyer spoke of his wife's patience, saying: 'I love her with all my heart. You know, she challenges me every day. She’s kept me very grounded.' He reflected on his earlier struggles, adding: 'It f***ed my head up when I became really famous. I didn’t quite know what to do with it.'
