Former BBC Football Focus host Dan Walker has expressed fury over Scotland manager Steve Clarke's conduct during a post-match interview after Scotland's 3-0 defeat to Brazil on June 24. The team now sits third in Group C, facing a potential World Cup exit.
Clarke's Reluctant Responses
Live on BBC after the match, Clarke appeared visibly frustrated when questioned by a Scottish reporter. Asked for his initial thoughts on the 90 minutes, Clarke muttered: "We made it difficult for ourselves. That's it."
The reporter pressed further: "Up against top quality opposition like that, I suppose the frustration is they didn't have to work too hard for their goals?" Clarke replied: "We gave them the goals, we gave them the game they wanted… disappointing."
Final Question Sparks Walkout
The exchange escalated when the journalist asked: "Bit of a waiting game now, what do you think of what's to come?" Clarke snapped: "Ah, we're always waiting. I don't even think about that. Sorry, I don't even think about that." He then stormed off-screen, later admitting to the press: "For sure, I think we're going home."
Walker's Criticism
Dan Walker took to Twitter to criticize Clarke, writing: "Totally get that he doesn't want to be interviewed but this is incredibly rude. He's not just talking to the reporter… there are millions of Scots watching back home." Sports presenter Daniel Hussey agreed, calling it a "poor interview."
Another viewer commented: "He seems insulted that he's asked to appear in front of the press and fans after the game." However, some defended Clarke, arguing: "If you don't want an honest reaction then don't ask questions as soon as the game has finished and emotions are running hot. I'm sure given an hour or so he could give you a much more considered response."
