Dan Snow, the well-known history presenter, has a life as fascinating as the historical stories he tells on screen. Behind the camera, his family connections include a famous news anchor cousin, a wife with ties to the royal family, and a lineage that traces back to a former British Prime Minister.
Family Background and Upbringing
Born in December 1978, Snow grew up in a family steeped in history. In an interview with Mail Online, he recalled: "I was a pretty average kid at primary school. My parents lifted me with the support they gave me at home, and whenever we went on holiday or days out, we were always doing history-related projects." His mother's side boasts great-great-grandfather David Lloyd George, Prime Minister from 1916 to 1922, who led Britain through World War I and helped establish the Irish Free State.
Military service is also a family tradition. His great-grandfather, Thomas Snow, fought on the Western Front during World War I and participated in the Attack on the Gommecourt Salient on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Another relative, George Snow, became the fifth Bishop of Whitby.
Famous Relatives in Broadcasting
Broadcasting runs in the family. Dan's father, Peter Snow, is a familiar TV face, while his cousin Jon Snow anchored Channel 4 News for over three decades until December 2021. In his final sign-off, Jon said: "All the people who have trusted me with their stories, all over the world, often in appalling circumstances ... it has been the greatest privilege of my life to bring you the news."
Marriage to Lady Edwina Grosvenor
Dan married Lady Edwina Grosvenor in 2010, joining one of Britain's wealthiest families. They met at a mutual friend's wedding, where they were seated together intentionally. Dan later said he knew she was "the one." Lady Edwina, a criminologist and philanthropist, is the sister of the Duke of Westminster, whose fortune is estimated at nearly £10 billion. The Duke is also Prince George's godfather. Following the death of the Duke's father in 2017, Dan paid tribute: "They're a lovely, close family, really close. The four of them are a team. It's extraordinary." The couple has three children: Zia, Wolf, and Orla.
Elopement Decision
Dan and Lady Edwina chose to elope in November 2010 rather than hold a lavish wedding. They told the Daily Mail: "Neither of us has ever wanted a big white wedding. We are delighted we have been free to plan a simple and relaxed wedding exactly as we wished, with our families around us." The private ceremony took place at Bishop's Lodge in Woolton, Liverpool, conducted by the Bishop of Liverpool, James Jones, with only close family present.
