Dame Penelope Keith, the acclaimed actress best known for her iconic roles in the sitcoms The Good Life and To The Manor Born, has died at the age of 86, her family announced.
A Career Spanning Stage and Screen
Keith rose to fame playing the snobbish suburbanite Margo Leadbetter in The Good Life from 1975, a role that earned her a Bafta in 1977. She later starred as the widowed aristocrat Audrey fforbes-Hamilton in To The Manor Born from 1979. Her career encompassed both stage and television, with notable appearances in sitcoms such as Executive Stress, No Job For A Lady, and Next Of Kin.
Honours and Charity Work
In 2007, Keith was appointed a CBE for her services to acting and charity, and in 2014 she was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle. She was deeply involved with charitable organizations, serving as a patron and fundraiser for the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire and working with the Film and TV Charity and the Artists Benevolent Fund.
Keith met the royal family on several occasions. In November 2024, she attended a Buckingham Palace reception to mark the centenary of the Film and TV Charity, where she met King Charles III. She also shared a laugh with the then Prince of Wales in 2007 during a lunch reception for the Actors' Benevolent Fund at Clarence House.
Legacy and Later Roles
In addition to her television work, Keith lent her voice to several advertising campaigns, including Pimm's, Lurpak, and the Parker Pen Company, the latter being named one of the 100 greatest adverts. In recent years, she returned to the theatre, taking on roles such as Madame Arcati in Blithe Spirit and Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest.
Keith was named Show Business Personality of 1976 by the Variety Club of Great Britain. Her co-star in To The Manor Born, Peter Bowles, was a frequent collaborator, and the series was revealed as one of the top three most popular programmes in the history of British television at the time.
