Couple with 30-year age gap face online trolling

Mac, 26, and Jo, 56, who met while working at an animal centre, have become the focus of workplace gossip and online criticism due to their 30-year age gap. The couple, who share their relationship on social media, have faced rude comments from strangers, including assumptions that they are mother and son.

Instant Attraction and Initial Hesitation

Mac admitted to Love Don't Judge: "I was attracted to this woman the minute I laid eyes on her." Jo, however, was initially hesitant about the age difference, saying: "I was very concerned about the age gap at first. I've never been with someone this young."

Jo, who was admitted to hospital in her 20s after being diagnosed with a brain tumour, says her doctors told her she has 'Peter Pan syndrome', leaving her feeling as though she is still in her 20s. She added: "I'm trapped at 22, no matter what I do. All of my friends are in their 20s. I just vibe with that vibe. I can't help it. My body is aging but my mind just won't."

Mac believes their relationship works because she has a more mature outlook on life, meaning their minds "mesh so well together".

Online Criticism and Family Reactions

The couple began sharing their relationship on TikTok, but quickly faced criticism. Mac said: "People were making the assumption that we were related. People see that dynamic and automatically think, that seems like a mother/son relationship." Jo added: "I was more in shock at the name-calling. It's hurtful." She has been called weird and a grandma, while others have told her she should be ashamed of herself for dating somebody so much younger.

Jo explained that she originally joined TikTok to share videos of her work as a dog groomer, never expecting her relationship to attract so much judgement. Meanwhile, Mac says trolls accused her of having 'mummy or daddy issues' for dating someone a similar age to her own parents.

Mac's mum, Coco, shared her concerns, saying: "Surprised and concerned, more so the long-term concerns. The fact they're at very different stages in their lives and what does that look like for my daughter." However, Jo's son, Jason, was more positive, saying: "This is very different but I was excited for her. I knew that she was in love and I knew their love would grow." Both Coco and Jason said they simply want the couple to be happy.

Public Reactions

Commenting on the relationship, one user said: "There's so many of us praying to be loved. If this is genuinely a loving relationship the age difference doesn't matter to me." Another user added: "People say many things. But time tells all things." A third user said: "That lady looks great for 56." One more user noted: "The problem is not now, its what happens in 20 years when she 46 and the elder is 76... it begins to be a lot different then."
