Katy Cavanagh, known for her role as Julie Carp on Coronation Street, has left the ITV soap for the second time to focus on managing the acting careers of her two sons, Noah and Jacobi Jupe. The 52-year-old actress, who played the character intermittently since 2008, has now turned her attention to behind-the-scenes work after her character was killed off last year.
Cavanagh's sons, Noah, 20, and Jacobi, 11, have both landed roles in the Oscar-tipped film Hamnet, directed by Chloé Zhao. Noah plays Hamlet in a play within the film, while Jacobi portrays one of William Shakespeare's children. Their mother has been instrumental in their early success, putting her own career on hold to help them break into the industry.
A source told the Daily Mail: 'She's put everything into helping the boys have the best start in the industry. She's put her own career on the back burner to help them realise their dreams.' The film, which also stars Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, has generated significant awards buzz ahead of its UK release.
Cavanagh first joined Coronation Street in 2008 and left in 2015, returning briefly last year for a storyline in which Julie Carp died from a rare form of cancer. She had previously said she would not rule out a return, but the character's death appears to close that door. The actress has also appeared in shows such as Bodies, Midsomer Murders, and Birds of a Feather.
Discussing her return last year, Cavanagh said it was 'lovely to get the call' and that she was 'very fond of Julie'. She added that the short stint allowed her to fit it in with other commitments. Now, with her sons' careers taking off, Cavanagh is focusing on their Hollywood future.
