Coronation Street Stars: Tragic Deaths and New Careers After Leaving the Cobbles

Coronation Street, the world's longest-running drama serial, has been a staple of British television for 64 years. Since its debut on December 9, 1960, the soap has featured 57 births, 146 deaths, and 131 weddings across more than 10,000 episodes. While many actors have come and gone, some have faced tragedy after leaving Weatherfield, while others have embarked on new career paths.

John Savident, who played Fred Elliott from 1994 to 2006, died at the age of 86 on February 21, 2024. His character met a heartbreaking end after suffering a stroke following a confrontation with Audrey Roberts. After leaving the soap, Savident appeared in pantomimes, stage productions, and voiced a character in a Doctor Who audio drama. His agent confirmed his death, describing him as a 'much-loved husband and father.'

Steven Arnold, who played Ashley Peacock from 1995 to 2010, saw his character die in the tram crash during the show's 50th anniversary episode. Since leaving, Arnold has found success in various TV roles and as a producer, but has particularly enjoyed stage work. He also appeared on Dancing on Ice in 2011 and in Casualty, among other projects.

Bill Tarmey, known for his portrayal of Jack Duckworth over 30 years, died from a heart attack in November 2012 at age 71. His on-screen wife Liz Dawn paid tribute, calling him a 'gentle giant.' Tarmey left the soap due to health issues and his son's brain tumour diagnosis. His final scene, where Jack died in the same chair as Vera, drew 11 million viewers.

Liz Dawn, who played Vera Duckworth for 34 years, passed away peacefully in September 2017 after suffering from a lung condition. She received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2008 British Soap Awards and made a brief return to acting in Emmerdale in 2015.
