Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard has shared an 'important announcement' on Instagram amid her breast cancer battle. The 69-year-old actress, who is still feeling "anxious" while waiting for results, revealed she and her husband Jon McEwan have decided to adopt a dog named Elvis.
Waiting for biopsy results
Callard announced earlier this year that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Around the same time, she and McEwan relocated to Ireland so she could star as Lily Patterson in the RTE soap Fair City. The actress, best known for playing Liz McDonald on Coronation Street on and off for 30 years, recently completed radiotherapy but is still awaiting further scan results on her stomach.
In a video posted to Instagram on Wednesday evening, she said: "Okay, an update. So, I finished work early today, was a good day there. I've still got no results of my biopsies from my tummy, so I'm waiting. Obviously, quite anxious, but I'm good. I'm good. Everything is just trucking along."
Adopting Elvis
In recent days, Callard and her husband visited Dublin Dog Hub, where she developed a soft spot for a pooch named Elvis and had been urging her followers to help find him a home. The couple already have two dogs, and McEwan was initially unsure about adopting another.
In her latest post, Callard revealed they had decided to take Elvis home after all. She said: "I came home from work today and did get some good news." McEwan added: "I've been to Maxi Zoo, and I've got a five-meter training lead."
Callard jumped in with glee: "We're getting Elvis! Yes!" before McEwan jokingly added: "I put my foot down, I got my own way. I knew that we wouldn't get him, but then we did." The pair just have to wait a week or so for their new canine companion to arrive as he is in the process of being neutered and microchipped.
Fans react
The former I'm A Celeb star finished the update by saying: "We'll keep up updated...oh dear, what have we done?" before exclaiming: "We're thrilled, we're thrilled!" She captioned the post: "Important announcement time, decision made."
Callard's followers were quick to react, with one writing: "actually crying, so happy for yo," whilst another said: "He is one lucky little chap, with a lovely Mummy and Daddy and playmates." A third wrote: "Fantastic news xx. The excitement is unreal so happy for you both x. Pray y hear soon re the results and you have Elvis to keep your mind off things."
The adoption comes just days after the actress told fans she had to rest after losing consciousness on set and had been left with no choice but to cancel plans, though she had already committed to visiting the dogs home. She said: "Well, you'll be all pleased to know I've been resting like that. And, which to be honest, I do apart from going to work. I've got no social life, and my life is on hold. But I can't not go to work. We've cancelled everything aside from one commitment I'd made, which I couldn't let them down."
Callard then revealed she and her husband were at a dog sanctuary. Various clips showed her trying to persuade McEwan to take another dog home, but in the end he exclaimed: "We've got enough dogs!"
