Coronation Street fans have been left stunned after learning that Betsy Swain's real name is Elizabeth. The revelation came during a hospital scene on Wednesday (July 22) when a police officer addressed the character as Elizabeth Swain.
Betsy's Real Name Revealed
Betsy Swain, played by Sydney Martin, first arrived on the cobbles in 2024 alongside her mother, DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers). Since then, she has been involved in several major storylines, including the death of her boyfriend Mason Radcliffe (Luca Toolan), the return of her mother Becky (Amy Cudden), and finding Theo Silverton's (James Cartwright) body on the night of Lisa's wedding to Carla Connor (Alison King).
Most recently, Betsy suffered two strokes just days before she was due to leave for London to study. The strokes were caused by non-fatal strangulation during consensual sex with her boyfriend, Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne). After learning the cause, Lisa reported Dylan to the police, though Betsy urged her not to.
Hospital Scene Reveals Truth
In Wednesday's episode, Dylan visited Betsy in hospital and apologized, saying, "I want to make this right. Please just tell me how I can make this right." A police officer then arrived to take Betsy's statement. The officer said, "Elizabeth Swain," before turning to Dylan: "I need to talk to Elizabeth, so if you could..." Dylan quickly left.
Betsy later told her mother she did not want to press charges, frustrating Lisa and best friend Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton).

Many Corrie fans took to social media to express their surprise. One wrote on a Facebook fan page: "Learnt something new today. Betsy's actual name is Elizabeth! Thought she was always Betsy!" Another added: "Oh I missed that!" A third said: "I thought the character's name was Betsy. I like it. Never knew the character's full name was Elizabeth and I watch every episode I can." Someone else commented: "Omg I never would have guessed that!" while a fifth viewer shared: "I've never heard the name [Betsy] until this show."
