Betsy's Stroke Ordeal
As those who follow the ITV soap know, Lisa faced any parent's worst nightmare when her daughter, Betsy Swain, was rushed to hospital this week, marking the start of a major new awareness storyline for the programme. It was previously confirmed that the teenager would be found collapsed on the kitchen floor of No.6 Coronation Street, before being rushed to the hospital as she fought for her life. The finger of blame was quickly pointed at her love interest, Dylan.
As Wednesday's (July 15) episode of Corrie got underway, there were shock scenes as an ambulance pulled away from number six, before it was revealed that Ryan Connor had been the one to discover an unconscious Betsy on the kitchen floor. A frantic Carla Connor-Swain made her way to the hospital where she found Ryan, who then took her to be with Lisa and their poorly daughter. Later, doctors confirmed that the teenager had suffered a stroke, something Lisa struggled to get her head around due to her daughter's age.
Second Stroke and Cause Revealed
Her devastated mums kept vigil by Betsy's bedside, until things took a horror turn as, once her condition appeared to have stabilised, Betsy suffered a second stroke. It was after this that doctors confirmed it had been caused by a blood clot, which was the result of neck artery damage from a temporary loss of circulation. It left Betsy having to tell her mum that Dylan had strangled her during consensual sex, despite both believing the pressure applied was minimal.
During Thursday's (July 16) follow-up episode, more of Betsy's results were in, and they confirmed to her and her family that the stroke had caused aphasia and dysarthria, but doctors were hopeful she would make a good recovery. Despite her condition, Betsy pleaded with her mum not to blame Dylan for what had happened as she spoke about reporting the incident to the police.
Lisa Confronts Dylan and Reports the Crime
Soon, having headed back to the Street, Lisa came face-to-face with Dylan and challenged him on his behaviour so the whole cafe could hear. Despite Betsy's earlier wishes, Lisa was determined to make Dylan pay for what he had done, and made her way to the police station. She told the desk sergeant that she'd like to report a crime. It was the moment at the end of the episode that caught Corrie viewers' attention as Vicky, as Lisa, looked directly into the camera as she spoke, with them flocking to social media to comment.
