Coronation Street's PC Jess Heywood returns, actor confirms

Donnaleigh Bailey has confirmed her return as PC Jess Heywood on Coronation Street, sharing a video on Instagram of herself in police uniform inside a dressing room. The post, set to the song 'Getting Arrested By The Police' by The Very Nice Interesting Singer Man, was captioned 'Waiting to go on set got me like…' alongside police-themed emojis.

Character background and fan demand

Jess first joined the show in 2017 as a mentor to Craig Tinker, played by Colson Smith. She has appeared intermittently since, including last summer to pay respects to a fallen colleague killed by villain Mick Michaelis, and in April during a special episode focusing on Todd Grimshaw's domestic violence ordeal.

Fans have bombarded the show's social media with requests to make Jess a permanent cast member. One fan commented on Bailey's post: 'Sorry you missed out on the battering ram arrest today!' referring to Sarah Platt's arrest for murder. Another suggested a romance between Jess and Ryan Connor, writing: 'Yesssssss Jessssssss , we need you and Ryan together.' A third simply said: 'Can't wait to see more of PC Jess!'

Bailey's soap career

Bailey is best known for playing Michelle Corrigan on BBC's Doctors, after originally joining that show as Jessica Collins. She has also appeared in Casualty and Holby City, and played two separate roles on Coronation Street before being cast as PC Jess: a nurse in 2015 and PC Woodruff in 2016.

With Jess's return imminent, it remains unclear whether her storyline will involve Theo's murder investigation, the charges Lisa Connor-Swain filed against Dylan for Betsy's injuries, or something else.
