Coronation Street Tributes Director Kay Patrick, 84

Coronation Street has paid tribute to Kay Patrick, who directed more than 250 episodes of the ITV soap, following her death at the age of 84. At the conclusion of Tuesday's episode on 30 June, a tribute to Kay Patrick was broadcast featuring a photograph of the late director alongside the words: "In memory of Kay Patrick 1941-2026."

Kay became part of Coronation Street in 1994 and remained with the show for 21 years, directing more than 250 episodes. She passed away on 2 June aged 84, with news of her death revealed on 24 June alongside funeral arrangements.

Kay Patrick's Work on Coronation Street

Throughout her tenure, Kay helmed the devastating final episode featuring Hayley Cropper, portrayed by Julie Hesmondhalgh. In the poignant 2014 storyline, Hayley, who had appeared on the cobbles since 1998, made the decision to end her own life rather than suffer the agonising pain of pancreatic cancer.

Iconic character Hayley was recognised for her relationship and marriage to cobbles stalwart Roy Cropper, portrayed by David Neilson. Hayley actress Julie, 56, previously commended Kay for her contribution to her concluding episodes, stating in a previous interview: "The almost holy atmosphere she created in the studio during those last scenes... She instinctively knew that it was a one-take moment, and so just blocked it and shot it with such understated love and sensitivity. It's entirely down to Kay that those scenes were as raw and memorable as they were."

Other Credits and Career Transition

Alongside Coronation Street, Kay's credits included working on the revived Crossroads in 2001, the BBC series Sunburn, Merseybeat and Brookside. Kay originally trained as an actor at Rada in London, appearing in programmes including Doctor Who, Crossroads, Nana and The First Churchills. However, following a desire to collaborate more closely with writers and completing a television directing course, Kay transitioned into a directing career.

Tributes from Colleagues

According to Express, former Coronation Street star Lisa George, who portrayed Beth Tinker in the soap, paid tribute to the late director, writing: "Awwww I loved Kay- worked with her quite a bit and just felt so safe in her hands. I thought she was amazing xxx."

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV and ITV X.
