Coronation Street paid a special television tribute to former director Kay Patrick following her death at the age of 84. At the end of Tuesday's episode on June 30, a photograph of Patrick appeared on screen with the words: "In memory of Kay Patrick 1941-2026."
Career at Coronation Street
Kay Patrick joined the ITV soap in 1994 and remained part of its production team for 21 years. She directed more than 250 episodes during her tenure. Her death occurred on Friday, June 5, with the news publicly announced last week. Her funeral took place on Monday.
In 2014, Patrick received widespread praise for her direction of Hayley Cropper's farewell episode. The character, portrayed by Julie Hesmondhalgh, decided to end her own life rather than suffer the pain of pancreatic cancer, leaving her husband Roy Cropper, played by David Neilson, heartbroken. The episode was watched by more than 10 million viewers and was lauded for its sensitive handling of the difficult subject matter.
Julie Hesmondhalgh later remarked on Patrick's direction, saying: "The almost holy atmosphere she created in the studio during those last scenes ... She instinctively knew that it was a one-take moment, and so just blocked it and shot it with such understated love and sensitivity. It's entirely down to Kay that those scenes were as raw and memorable as they were." Reflecting on her time at Coronation Street, Patrick said: "I was lucky to be there at such extraordinary times."
Work Across Other Soaps
Beyond Coronation Street, Patrick worked on nearly every major soap and continuing drama produced in the UK, including Emmerdale, Brookside, Holby City, and EastEnders. She began her career as an actress, appearing in the original run of Doctor Who alongside the First Doctor William Hartnell in the 1960s, and also featured in the police procedural drama Z-Cars. Through acting, she discovered a passion for collaborating with writers and transitioned into directing, honing her skills on the BBC Radio 2 soap Waggoners' Walk from 1971.
Tributes from Colleagues
Tributes poured in following the news of her death. Former Coronation Street actress Lisa George, who played Beth Trinker, wrote: "Awwww I loved Kay- worked with her quite a bit and just felt so safe in her hands. I thought she was amazing xxx." Another friend commented: "So saddened to hear about Kay's passing. It was an honour to know her. Such a kind, lovely lady and a cat lover to boot! Kay was so loved and respected by all who worked on Coronation Street. Rest in peace, Kay." A third simply said: "I'm so sorry to hear about Kay. It was a pleasure to know her. Xx."
