Heartbroken Coronation Street fans have predicted Gary Windass’ exit after nearly two decades. Gary (Mikey North) made his debut back in 2008 with the rest of the Windass family, including mum Anna (Debbie Rush). And it didn’t take him long to become a firm favourite.
The builder also played a part in several big storylines over the years. From his romances on the cobbles to his PTSD battle, Gary’s time in Weatherfield has not been short of drama.
Murder cover-up
Especially at the moment, as in recent weeks, it was revealed he helped cover up the murder of evil Theo Silverton (James Cartwright). Gary’s ex Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien) killed Theo after she attacked him with a metal pole on top of the scaffolding. Sarah picked up the pole and hit Theo, who abused Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) for years, over the head, sending him falling over the edge of the scaffolding and to the ground below.
A panicked and shaken Sarah then called up Gary, who helped cover up the crime. And although months went by without the truth coming out, this week, Sarah was arrested and has since been sent to jail.
Sarah confesses
In Friday’s episode (July 24) though, Sarah was visited by DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) in prison, in which Sarah confessed to killing Theo in self-defence. Lisa then told Sarah that they checked her phone records the night Theo was murdered and noticed she called up Gary. Startled, Sarah quickly came up with a cover story, claiming she had spoken to Gary about a video game her son wanted. Unfortunately for Sarah, Lisa told her she didn’t believe her for a moment.
Fans react
And now, with more drama likely to come on the cobbles, fans reckon it’s only a matter of time until Gary joins Sarah in prison. “I think Sarah will get not guilty in court for murder, but Gary will get guilty for helping her and go to prison,” said one person on a Coronation Street Facebook fan page. Someone else added: “I think Gary will hand himself in to the police and say he killed Theo to protect Sarah!” A third devastated fan chimed in: “I will stop watching it if that happens; they can't send the wrong guy to prison.”
