Michael Byrne, the actor known for his roles in Coronation Street and Indiana Jones, has died at the age of 82. His death was confirmed on Tuesday, June 30, though he passed away on Saturday, June 20.
Coronation Street role as Ted Page
Byrne is best remembered by soap fans for playing Ted Page, the long-lost father of Gail Platt (Helen Worth), on the ITV soap Coronation Street. Ted first appeared in spring 2008, after Gail had gone over five decades without knowing her father.
Gail's mother Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls) had a relationship with Ted, a soldier at the time, hoping he would propose so she could get her son Stephen (Todd Boyce) back. After discovering she was pregnant, Audrey decided not to tell Ted. However, Ted eventually learned he had a daughter and attempted to build a relationship with her. Within a week of arriving, he revealed he was gay and had recently lost his partner of 20 years.
Ted became a friendly face on the cobbles, offering life advice to his grandson David (Jack P. Shepherd) and striking up a friendship with Ken Barlow (William Roache). He even supported Audrey after her breakup with Bill Webster (Peter Armitage). In 2009, Ted suffered a heart attack after being attacked by Gary Windass (Mikey North) during a burglary attempt, but later forgave him. Byrne began his career in theatre, appearing in 1960s productions alongside Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens. He later moved into film, acting alongside Mel Gibson in Braveheart and Pierce Brosnan in Tomorrow Never Dies. He also played a Jewish concentration camp survivor in Apt Pupil.
Byrne is arguably best known for playing Colonel Vogel in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where his ruthless Nazi officer faced off against Harrison Ford's hero. He also played Gellert Grindelwald in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and appeared in films such as The Eagle Has Landed, A Bridge Too Far, The Medusa Touch, The Saint, The Sum of All Fears, and Gangs of New York.

Byrne is survived by his wife Carole, who cared for him at the end of his life despite their separation, as well as two daughters, Tara and Bryony, and three grandchildren: Tom, Chloe, and Jasmine.
