Coronation Street star Claire Sweeney has paid an emotional tribute to her former partner, boxing legend Ricky Hatton, following his death at the age of 46. Greater Manchester Police confirmed that Hatton was found dead at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, on Sunday, with no suspicious circumstances.
Sweeney, 54, took to Instagram on Tuesday to honour Hatton, whom she described as 'the people's champ'. She shared a montage of clips and photographs set to Elvis Presley's 'If I Can Dream', writing: 'I've needed a few days to process the devastating news about my dear friend Ricky. My thoughts are with his family, especially his children Campbell, Millie, Fearne and Lyla, and his granddaughter.'
The actress and Hatton had been friends for more than 20 years before their romance blossomed after they both took part in the 2024 series of Dancing on Ice. They began dating in early 2024 but split in December after an eight-month relationship. Sweeney previously said of their connection: 'He makes me laugh, that's it.'
Sweeney's Coronation Street co-stars were quick to offer their support. Elle Mulvaney responded with heart emojis, while Samia Longchambon wrote: 'So so sorry Claire. All my love.' Lucy Fallon added: 'So sorry Claire x' with a heartbroken emoji, and Catherine Tyldesley said: 'I'm so deeply sorry my love. A true legend gone too soon.'
Hatton, a former world champion boxer, was widely known as 'The Hitman' and remained a beloved figure in the sport. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief from fans and fellow sports figures alike.
