An exhibition of paintings by The Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde is set to launch in Scotland. Titled Chrissie Hynde: On Canvas, the showcase will open at the Harvey And Woodd art gallery in Edinburgh on August 1 and run through August 28. The exhibition comprises 25 pieces spanning portraiture, still life, and abstraction.
A New Artistic Chapter for the Rock Icon
The 74-year-old American musician has transitioned from singing to painting in recent years, with her artwork displayed globally for the past eight years. Hynde's visual art has even graced the sleeve of her 2019 album Valve Bone Woe, a collection of cover versions. Her vibrant geometric shapes and hand motifs were used in Vivienne Westwood's spring/summer 2021 collection, and nearly 200 of her original artworks were published in the 2018 book Adding The Blue via Genesis Publications.
This exhibition follows previous showcases, including Hynde Sight at Kensington’s Cromwell Place in 2024, which later moved to Harvey And Woodd in Edinburgh in 2025, evolving into Hynde Sight II.
Musical Legacy and Collaborations
Hynde released her latest solo album Duets Special in October last year, featuring collaborations with Blondie singer Debbie Harry, The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers, and Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. With The Pretenders, she has achieved six UK top 10 singles, including the number one hit “Brass in Pocket,” and five UK top 10 albums, topped by their self-titled debut. Other well-known songs include “2,000 Miles,” “I’ll Stand By You,” and “Don’t Get Me Wrong.” The band was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2005.
