Chinese Social Media Star Zhu Mingyue Succumbs to Cancer at Age 41
The digital community is mourning the loss of Chinese influencer Zhu Mingyue, who died last Thursday at the age of 41 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. The heartbreaking announcement was made on Monday via her official Douyin account, the Chinese equivalent of TikTok, as reported by the news site Sina.
A Sudden and Tragic Passing
The statement on her social media revealed that Mingyue, also known by her online alias Mi Duo, passed away suddenly after "failing to respond to medical treatment." A native of Harbin, China, she had publicly shared her breast cancer diagnosis in late 2024, connecting with over 100,000 followers on Douyin throughout her journey.
Mingyue graduated from Harbin Normal University in 2002 and went on to achieve success in both business and social media. She leaves behind a husband and three children, who are now grappling with the immense loss.
A Daughter's Heartfelt Tribute
In a moving obituary, Mingyue's daughter described her mother's unwavering spirit during the final eighteen months of her life. "For the past year and a half, she had been repeatedly tormented by illness, enduring unimaginable physical pain yet she remained optimistic and strong," she said.
The daughter recounted the profound selflessness Mingyue displayed even in her most vulnerable moments. "A few days before she passed away, she was already blind and slurring her speech but still remained selfless in hopes of comforting me," she shared. "She still held my hand and comforted me, 'Don’t cry, baby. This is a tough time, but Mommy will be better in a few days.'"
Reflecting on her mother's character, she added, "She spent her whole life worrying about others, caring for everyone around her, but neglecting herself."
An Unyielding Fight Against Illness
Mingyue's daughter opened up about the brave manner in which her mother confronted the deadly disease. "My mother was strong-willed her whole life and never bowed to illness," she stated. "During chemotherapy and radiotherapy, she underwent frequent blood draws until her veins were almost impossible to puncture."
Despite the intense personal suffering, Mingyue "gritted her teeth and persevered, never considering giving up." Her daughter expressed a mix of emotions, saying, "As her daughter, my heart was filled with heartache and resentment; I couldn’t bear to see her suffer, yet I longed for the time I had with her."
She recalled her mother's poignant words: "As long as I have a breath left, we three children will still have our mother."
A Wave of Premature Influencer Deaths
The tragic news about Mingyue arrives amidst a series of other untimely deaths among social media personalities in March. Colombian influencer Carolina Reyes, known as 'Carol the Warrior,' died on March 11 at the age of 23 after her own cancer battle.
In Brazil, influencer Karla Thaynnara lost her life at just 25 in a motorcycle accident on March 3 in Brasília. The tragedy was compounded when her father, José Carlos Andrade Nogueira, committed suicide upon learning of her death.
Another Brazilian influencer, Larissa da Silva Machado, died at 30 on March 27 in a motorbike crash in Manaus, after officials reported she lost control of her Honda CG 160 Titan. Prior to these March incidents, Taiwan-based influencer Wang Wei-Chien passed away at 29, five years after being diagnosed with lymphoma.
The passing of Zhu Mingyue marks a somber moment for her followers and the broader influencer community, highlighting the fragility of life and the resilience displayed by many in the face of adversity.
