The first full-length trailer for the fantasy film Children of Blood and Bone has been released, showcasing a star-studded cast that includes Cynthia Erivo, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Regina King, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Damson Idris, and Amandla Stenberg. The film is based on Tomi Adeyemi's bestselling 2018 novel of the same name.
Premise and setting
Set in the West African-inspired fantasy world of Orïsha, the story follows young Zélie Adebola (Thuso Mbedu) as she attempts to reclaim the magical powers stolen from her people. Alongside her brother and the king's children, she fights against a brutal ruler. The trailer is soundtracked to Beyoncé's 2022 song Energy.
Author's public rejection
Despite the film's high-profile cast and long development since its 2017 announcement, author Tomi Adeyemi has distanced herself from the adaptation. In July 2026, she publicly stated she would not watch or promote the film and revealed she had blocked lead actress Amandla Stenberg. Adeyemi shared messages on TikTok saying, 'There is a reason i will not post anything about the adaptation of my work. that is all.'
She also posted a screenshot of a text to Stenberg instructing her not to use her name again. The reason for her upset remains unknown. Adeyemi had previously signed on as an executive producer and screenwriter for the film.
Release date and background
Children of Blood and Bone is scheduled for release on January 15, 2027. The film's acquisition by Paramount Pictures was one of the largest young adult publishing deals ever. Adeyemi had earlier expressed her dream cast, naming Viola Davis and Idris Elba as top picks.
