Charlotte Church has spoken about her role in a new film adaptation of Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood, describing the work as 'radically surreal and erotic'. The singer and actress, who plays a character in the ensemble cast, said she was initially unsure about taking on the part, having not acted for some time. 'I was a bit, “I can’t do it, that’s not my forte, I shouldn’t take jobs off really good actors,”' she admitted. However, after a conversation with director Kevin Allen, she was drawn in.
Church praised the collaborative atmosphere on set, contrasting it with the music industry. 'I always thought musicians were the most hedonistic lot, but actors are phwoah… something else,' she said. She also reflected on the Welsh character, noting, 'We’re quite a surreal nation at times, which might have something to do with the amount of magic mushrooms growing on the hillside.'
The star, who has been politically active, expressed admiration for Jeremy Corbyn's leadership. 'I do think the way Jeremy Corbyn is handling things at the moment is exemplary,' she said. 'For all that people think he’s not going to get elected because he’s not playing ball, he’s sticking to his principles. He’s been really courageous.'
Church also criticised Boris Johnson for dismissing anti-austerity protesters as 'crusties with nose rings', calling his comments 'disrespectful'. She described attending rallies with her children as a positive experience, saying, 'I have never witnessed any violence.'
On personal growth, Church said she prefers reading New Scientist to women's magazines and has been researching topics from education to free markets. 'As I get older, that’s what I want to do more and more,' she said. 'Not necessarily through formal education – we have the internet, which is this phenomenal resource.'
