BBC Breakfast presenter Charlie Stayt, 64, has been a fixture on the morning show since 2006, waking the nation for two decades. Despite his long-running on-screen role, he keeps his private life firmly out of the spotlight and is rarely pictured with his wife, Anne Breckell.
Marriage and children
Charlie and Anne tied the knot in 1995 and welcomed two children together two years later. Their first child, Phoebe Senara, was born in 1997, followed by Jake Hamilton in 2000. According to reports, the family lives in west London.
Details about Anne remain scarce, with conflicting reports about her career. The Sun reports she is a manager at a global corporation, while The Mail claims she works as a radio personality and an actress. Charlie is described as incredibly private about his family life and maintains no social media presence.
Career before Breakfast
Before becoming a journalist, Charlie reportedly worked as a roofer, a barman, and a roadie. He has referred to himself as a "late starter as a journalist," noting these years were not entirely wasted. His career began at a commercial radio station in his hometown of Gloucester before he moved to London for a news presenting role.
In 1995, he started his television career at ITN, later joining Five News as a reporter. He went on to present the network's prime-time bulletins and live debate programmes, and anchored Five News' coverage of the 9/11 attacks. He spent a total of ten years at ITN before joining BBC Breakfast as a relief presenter in 2006. He was confirmed as the programme's main host in December 2007.
Other ventures and routine
Charlie has also hosted reality TV shows including Jailbreak and Are You Telepathic, and appeared as a contestant on The Weakest Link in 2022. Speaking to RadioTimes.com in 2023, he shared his morning routine: "I refuse to snooze. As soon as the alarm goes off, I am up." He also embraces the siesta, saying, "It's become a big thing for me. I sort of sit down in the afternoon and consciously do nothing. No snooze and have a siesta, that's the formula."
Charlie earns between £190,000 and £194,999 per year for his work on the show, a figure confirmed in the BBC Annual Report covering top on-air salaries. His pay has remained unchanged from previous years. He co-hosts BBC Breakfast from Thursday to Saturday.
Co-host departure
It was announced last month that his co-host Naga Munchetty will leave Breakfast later this year to begin a new role on Radio 5 Live in January. It has not yet been revealed who will join Charlie on the sofa. BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One at 6am.
