Right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk has said he hopes Taylor Swift's engagement to NFL star Travis Kelce will make her 'more conservative', urging her to 'submit to your husband'. The Turning Point USA founder offered what he called congratulations to the pop megastar, whom he has regularly criticised for being 'woke', following the announcement.
Swift sent the internet into meltdown on Tuesday after revealing her engagement to Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, after two years of dating. The shared Instagram post accumulated over 16 million likes in three hours. Speaking on his show on Real America's Voice network, Kirk said: 'This is something that I hope will make Taylor Swift more conservative. Engage in reality more… Reject feminism. Submit to your husband, Taylor. You're not in charge.'
Kirk mused that one reason Swift had been so 'annoyingly liberal' was her unmarried status, and repeated that he would love to see her have a 'ton of children'. He suggested marrying Kelce – who previously described Donald Trump's Super Bowl attendance as an 'honour' – could 'de-radicalise' her. 'She might go from a cat lady to a JD Vance supporter,' Kirk added. 'She should have more children than she has houses.'
Kirk's comments sparked widespread disbelief on social media. One user wrote: 'Why is a grown man spending his day thinking about this?' Another added: 'This dude is so weird.' A third said: 'Can't they just be normal for one freaking day?' One user described Kirk as an 'ignorant, bigoted dogmatist', adding: 'Powerful women scare weak men like him.'
Despite Kirk's controversial remarks, other conservatives were more positive. President Trump, who has previously criticised Swift, particularly after her endorsement of Kamala Harris, told reporters: 'I wish them a lot of luck. I think he's a great player, a great guy, and I think she's a terrific person. So I wish them a lot of luck.'
