Charlene White Reveals Mental Health Struggles and Workplace Support Following Father's Tragic Death

Loose Women anchor Charlene White has spoken candidly about her mental health challenges and the crucial support she received from ITV and her colleagues after the devastating loss of her father in October 2025. The 45-year-old mother of two described her father as having been "living with a dark cloud" over his head that he "couldn't lift," revealing the profound impact his mental health struggles had on their family.

The Challenge of Performing While Grieving

Despite her personal grief, White demonstrated remarkable resilience while continuing her television work. She admitted to underestimating the difficulty of appearing on air while processing her loss. "What I underestimated is how difficult it is to go on air when you're holding it together in front of hundreds of thousands of people," she confessed in a recent interview, highlighting the emotional toll of maintaining a professional facade during personal turmoil.

ITV's Supportive Response

The broadcaster, who made history in April 2014 as the first Black woman to present ITV News At Ten, praised her employer for their understanding approach. "I work for an amazing company that has given me time when I've needed it," White explained. "When I've said, 'This week isn't a good week,' they've supported me." This flexibility allowed her to prioritize her mental wellbeing during particularly difficult periods.

Learning to Prioritize Mental Health

White has developed a new perspective on strength and vulnerability in the workplace. "We are strong when we need to be, but we also have to recognise when we're not," she reflected. "There have been times when I've had to step back because I couldn't be strong that week. That's important knowing the difference between being strong and faking it." This honest approach has helped her navigate her dual roles as a public figure and a grieving daughter.

Diversity Advocacy in Broadcasting

The conversation naturally turned to White's longstanding commitment to diversity in media, a passion that has defined much of her career. "I talk a lot about diversity because I believe, working in broadcasting and the media, what happens in front of the camera and behind the camera should reflect society," she stated emphatically. "All views matter, all opinions matter. That's the only way the industry can survive."

Family as Foundation

White credits her family with providing stability during challenging times. She shares her life with long-term partner Andy Woodfield and their two children, eight-year-old Alfie and six-year-old Florence, whom she describes as her "grounding force." "It's teamwork," she said of their family dynamic. "My partner and I have to work together to make it work. I love the work I do, he loves the work he does, and we both love our children."

The Loose Women Family Bond

The presenter also emphasized the genuine camaraderie among the Loose Women panel, which she joined permanently in 2021. "We have a WhatsApp group, we chat constantly, we celebrate wins and support each other through losses. We are a family," she revealed. This supportive environment has been particularly valuable following her personal loss, with both original cast members and newcomers creating a strong network of mutual support.

Looking Forward While Honoring the Past

As White prepares for a family trip to Jamaica that will include both a wedding celebration and scattering her father's ashes, she reflects on the importance of family connection. "The most important thing is being with my family, sharing stories and being together," she explained, demonstrating how personal and professional lives intertwine in her journey toward healing.
