The upcoming celebrity edition of The Traitors promises to be a psychological ordeal, with contestants facing the intense challenge of deception and trust. Host Claudia Winkleman admitted feeling ‘scared’ when the idea was first proposed, fearing that a celebrity version might dilute the magic of the original show. However, she now describes the cast as ‘tremendous’ and an ‘absolute honour’ to work with.
Winkleman revealed that hosting the celebrity version was ‘scarier’ because she had to remain aloof and ‘unlikable’, despite her desire to chat and be friendly. She confessed to being desperate to help during missions and even trying to drop clues, only to be told off by her producer. The host also teased her wardrobe as ‘unhinged in taffeta’.
The contestants, including Stephen Fry and Joe Wilkinson, have shared their motivations for taking part. One celebrity described the game as a ‘fascinating’ psychological experiment, noting that the real challenge is distinguishing trust from likability. ‘Who you like is easier, but who you trust is really hard,’ they said. Another participant expressed concern about being ‘too trusting’ and planned to watch for players who are casual about seeking shields.
The series features a complete digital detox, forcing players to connect directly. The show launches on Wednesday 8th October at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer, with two episodes per week.
