Manchester United fans could see JJ Gabriel make his first team debut this Friday against Rosenborg in Trondheim. The teenager, who turns 16 in October, was too young for Premier League minutes last season but impressed at academy level.
Impressive Record
Gabriel scored 23 goals in 23 appearances in the Under-18 Premier League last season and added three in the FA Youth Cup, where United lost to Manchester City in the final. He has been invited to train with the first team and is part of the travelling squad for the pre-season friendly.
Manager and Coach Praise
Manager Michael Carrick said in March: "He's not allowed, he's too young. JJ is a big talent, it's pretty obvious to know that and he's had a really good season for the Under-18s. We obviously think an awful lot of him, but patience is important in managing everything that comes with that and working with him in development."
Darren Fletcher, who coached Gabriel at Under-18s level, told The Athletic: "JJ’s an amazing talent and has an enthusiasm for football that he brings to the pitch every day: to learn, to want to play and be on the ball. He’s been a pleasure to work with. He’s a fantastic kid."
Fletcher added: "Once you get thrown in there, you’re judged very, very quickly, rightly or wrongly. It’s important that we do right by his development. JJ’s more than capable to go in, as are a lot of our young players."
Squad Details
Gabriel is the youngest in the squad for the Rosenborg match. Also travelling are senior stars Harry Maguire, Mason Mount, and Luke Shaw, along with fellow youngsters Chido Obi (18) and Fletcher's twin sons Jack and Tyler (both 19).
