Queen Camilla has opened up about the emotional difficulty of keeping King Charles's cancer diagnosis private, a revelation that highlights a stark contrast with Meghan Markle's approach to privacy.
In a clip from a new film marking the 30th anniversary of Maggie's cancer centres, Camilla said: "Nobody could say anything at the time - that was quite difficult. I almost said something [but] I felt that it wasn't the time to say."
Camilla's Silence on Charles's Diagnosis
Camilla was not simply keeping a secret. She carried the fear and uncertainty of knowing someone she loved had cancer, while understanding the information was not hers to disclose. She allowed Charles to tell the world in his own time, which he did on January 17, 2024, when Buckingham Palace revealed the King would receive treatment for an 'enlarged prostate'.
By contrast, Meghan Markle appears to struggle with the idea that some moments should remain private, and the Duchess of Sussex could learn from the Queen Consort.
Meghan's Reported Discretion Lapse
Meghan has a nonchalant relationship with the concept of keeping quiet, which is ironic for someone who spends time talking about privacy. This is particularly true of details from her recent trip to the UK.
Before Meghan, Prince Harry, and their children met Charles at Highgrove House on July 10, 2026, the King was reportedly determined there would be no cameras or official photographs. It was a private family visit, not a royal engagement. Reports subsequently claimed Meghan had asked for a photograph with the King but that the request was refused.
After returning to the US, she was overheard discussing the meeting at a dinner party, with Martha Stewart among those said to have heard the conversation. There were also claims that Meghan expressed her disappointment about the lack of photographs directly to Harry, while commentators suggested she viewed the decision as a deliberate refusal to provide an image with public-relations value.
Trust and the Future of Royal Relations
Camilla was trusted with sensitive information and understood it was not hers to share, a concept Meghan appears to struggle with. The Queen Consort understood that sometimes love means saying nothing. She did not reveal Charles's diagnosis or use her fears to draw attention to herself. She waited until her husband had spoken publicly before revealing how difficult that period had been for her.
Harry may someday hope for reconciliation with his family. But if Meghan cannot demonstrate she understands the difference between a private family moment and a public opportunity, it is difficult to see how the Palace could ever feel comfortable letting her back into the fold.
