Donald Trump was one of the first leaders to call Andy Burnham after he became Prime Minister. The Labour leader invited Trump to Manchester for next year's G20 summit in a reportedly cordial call.
However, the two have exchanged unflattering remarks in the past. Trump previously branded Burnham "extremely liberal" and "the mayor of a town".
Burnham's past criticism of Trump
During his Makerfield byelection campaign, Burnham described US politics as "polarized, poisonous politics where people in communities don't work together anymore." He also rejected Nigel Farage's plans for the NHS, saying: "We don't want a US-style health system in this country."
As rioters stormed the US Capitol in 2021, Burnham tweeted: "Any UK politician who gave Trump the time of day should be ashamed right now."
In a row over a Clean Air Zone in Manchester, the Conservative candidate called it "Andy's Congestion Tax." Burnham replied to a social media user: "Yep, one straight from the Trump playbook!"
In 2018, Burnham tweeted: "Alan Sugar’s desperation to be a mini-me UK Trump is excruciating." He also blamed Trump for rowdy US golf fans during the 2016 Ryder Cup, tweeting: "The golf is great. But American crowd makes it almost unwatchable. I blame Trump."
In 2021, Burnham criticised both Joe Biden and Donald Trump over the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, tweeting: "Worried for Afghanistan after the Biden speech. More leadership was needed. Why dig in behind the flawed Trump plan?"
Miliband's past rant
New Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband previously called Trump a "racist" and "misogynist" and claimed he had a "peculiar relationship with Russia" in a 2018 interview.
