Bruce Foxton, the 70-year-old bassist of the iconic British band The Jam, has announced that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, just days after cancelling his upcoming shows. The musician shared the news on Facebook, revealing that the condition was discovered during investigations into complications from his cancer treatment.
Foxton's Health Revelation
In his Facebook post, Foxton stated: "It's no secret that I've undergone treatment for cancer and am still having scans on a regular basis to keep an eye on that. However, what you don't know is that the cancer treatment in itself caused some significant issues for me and investigations into all of that uncovered the fact that I'm now facing a future living with Parkinson's Disease...and I'm determined to do that as well as I possibly can."
He added: "As anyone coping with this diagnosis will know it's a huge shock, and it's taking a long time to let that sink in and for me to accept that my body and mind are dealing with something completely out of my control. I have to manage the challenges I now face physically and mentally on a daily basis, and some days are better than others."
Fan Reactions
Fans were visibly distressed by the troubling announcement and flooded the comments section with messages of support for the music icon. One supporter wrote: "Sorry to hear about all your health problems you need to do what is best for you and your family moving forwards." Another commented: "All the best Bruce, your health is far more important than anything else and I am so sorry that you are having more health struggles. Look after yourself and I hope you enjoy many more years of happiness."
Background on The Jam
The Jam, formed in 1972, consisted of Paul Weller, Bruce Foxton, and Rick Buckler. The band achieved significant success in the late 1970s and early 1980s with hits like "Going Underground" and "Town Called Malice." Foxton's bass playing was a key element of their sound. After The Jam disbanded in 1982, Foxton pursued a solo career and later played with other artists.
Impact on Upcoming Shows
Foxton had recently cancelled his upcoming gigs at short notice, which prompted concern among fans. The Parkinson's diagnosis explains the sudden cancellation. He has not yet announced whether he will reschedule or retire from performing.
