A 16-year-old boy in New York City has been arrested after a video showing him punching a nine-year-old child went viral. The incident occurred in the Albany Houses, a public housing complex in Brooklyn.
In the footage, the teenager is heard shouting “give me candy” before slamming the child’s head into a wall. The nine-year-old managed to escape and reported the attack to his mother.
The video was posted on Instagram and viewed 60,000 times within two hours before being removed. Members of the public helped the New York Police Department identify the suspect, who was already known to authorities.
NYPD Chief Dermot Shea thanked the public for their assistance on Twitter, confirming the suspect had been apprehended. The teenager has been charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child.
