A British tourist staying in Tenerife has shared footage of the so-called 'sunbed wars' at her hotel, describing the early-morning scramble for loungers as both amusing and unnecessary.
Early morning rush caught on camera
Chenaiyah Bernard, 21, from Leeds, filmed the scene from her balcony at the hotel in Playa de las Américas on Friday July 24. At 7.45am, she spotted a group of holidaymakers gathered around the pool area, waiting for cleaners to finish before staking their claim on sunbeds and parasols.
In the video, set to the Mario Kart theme tune, tourists can be seen placing towels on sunbeds and standing next to parasols to mark their territory. Many then walked away, presumably to breakfast, leaving their towels behind.
'Pointless' effort, says tourist
Bernard said she found the situation 'funny' because the early birds' efforts proved pointless. When she later went down to relax by the pool, she had no trouble finding a sunbed. 'I don't care to wake up early for a sunbed but other people can do what they want,' she said.
She noted that the atmosphere was not 'competitive or aggressive', just amusing to watch. She added that some people likely want to 'hog the sunbeds all day' and prevent others from using them.
Social media reaction
Bernard's video has been viewed more than 160,000 times on TikTok and received over 5,000 likes. Commenters largely sided with her, with one asking: 'Why oh why do people do this you are on holiday for god's sake.' Another joked: 'All inclusive about as much fun as an MRI scan.'
