Breaking Bad actor RJ Mitte, 34, died by hanging at his Texas home, an inquest has confirmed. The actor, who played Walter White Jr in the hit AMC series, was found dead by his mother Dyna, who had gone to bring him lunch.
Inquest confirms cause of death
According to an inquest report cited by Page Six, Mitte died on October 12. The Cameron County, Texas, document confirmed the actor was pronounced dead at 1.32pm. His representative had previously confirmed he had taken his own life but declined to reveal further details.
A representative told the outlet: "It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte."
Mother describes discovering son
Mitte's mother Dyna previously opened up about how she discovered her son's body after visiting him to drop off lunch on the day he died. She revealed she had phoned her son that morning but was unable to get through, adding this was nothing out of the ordinary as he regularly slept until noon.
She told NBC News: "So I called him at 11. He didn't answer, so I picked up lunch and went to take it to him, and that's when I discovered him."
Dyna revealed that for three months she had "been offering for him to go to therapy, trying to get him to go there, but he was like, 'No, I've got it. It's OK. I'm handling it.'"
Concerns over mental wellbeing
The devastated mother admitted she wishes she had dragged him "screaming and yelling" to seek professional help. She believes his tragic decision was made on the spur of the moment.
Dyna opened up to The Hollywood Reporter regarding the tragic loss and confessed "there were concerns" surrounding his mental wellbeing. "It was more about the conversations we were having – not just with me, but with his team and friends," she revealed. "There were concerns. That's why I encouraged him to talk to a counsellor. I told him to talk to a therapist and share his feelings and how he saw things."
Career and advocacy
Mitte, who received a cerebral palsy (CP) diagnosis at the age of three, starred in 56 episodes of Breaking Bad and had also appeared in The Recall and The Guardians of Justice (Will Save You!). He championed the cause of performers and entertainment industry professionals living with disabilities.
