Boy George has branded JK Rowling a “bored rich bully” in a social media argument about trans rights. The Culture Club singer, 64, waded into a row after the Harry Potter author celebrated a Supreme Court ruling that declared trans females are not women under the law.
Rowling, 59, has faced repeated backlash for her comments on gender ideology. On April 17, the Supreme Court ruled that the legal definition of “man” and “woman” should be based on “biological sex”, a decision Rowling praised by posting a photo of herself with a drink and cigar, captioning it: “I love it when a plan comes together.”
The exchange began when an X user accused Rowling of being “the person maybe most responsible for the push to take away trans rights”. Rowling asked which rights had been taken away, to which Boy George replied: “The right to be left alone by a rich bored bully!”
Rowling responded by referencing George’s 2009 conviction for assault and false imprisonment of a male escort, writing: “I’ve never been given 15 months for handcuffing a man to a wall and beating him with a chain.” She added: “That’s why I don’t want to see men identifying into women’s prison cells or any of the spaces mentioned above.”
Several celebrities have criticised Rowling’s gender-critical views, including Harry Potter stars and actor Pedro Pascal, who called her views “awful disgusting s**t”. The Supreme Court ruling has sparked global protests, with stars like Nicola Coughlan condemning the decision as “disgusting”.
