Filmmaker and adventurer Leo Olsson has been announced as the 45th presenter of Blue Peter, the world's longest-running children's TV show. The 23-year-old London native will make his debut on Friday, November 20.
Presenter announcement
The announcement was made on Saturday morning (October 09), as the iconic programme celebrates a successful year since its relaunch. Leo is known for his curiosity, creativity and spirit of adventure, having built a loyal online following by encouraging young people to step outside their comfort zones, learn new skills and embrace new experiences.
Leo is best known for documenting ambitious personal challenges through his popular 'world's longest bucket list' project. Over the years, he has learned to play the piano and built a surfboard from scratch, among other accomplishments. Praised for his uplifting and authentic storytelling, he has attracted more than 13 million likes and over 454,000 followers across social media platforms.
Badge and debut
Leo will earn his Blue Peter badge by joining a formation skydive, with the badge awarded 4,000ft in the air. The episode will air on CBBC, as with every Blue Peter episode.
Speaking about the news, Leo said: "There's no other show in the world like Blue Peter, it's all about adventure and not being afraid to try new things. Where else would you find a presenter trying to cross the Irish Sea in a Zorb ball, or walk a tightrope between the chimneys of Battersea Power Station?"
"Growing up all of my role models were the people I watched online and on television, so now I want show kids that you can go out and do whatever you want to do, take on a challenge, big or small!"
"It's a privilege to join a programme with such an incredible legacy, and I can't wait to meet the audience, take on new challenges, and go on some unforgettable adventures together."
Programme legacy
Blue Peter was created by John Hunter Blair and aired its first episode in October 1958. The magazine-format show features segments on crafts, food, music, sport and celebrity guests. It is best known for viewers and stars working hard to earn a Blue Peter badge, with King Charles, Sir David Attenborough, David Beckham and David Tennant among the most famous Gold Badge Holders.
A number of high-profile UK TV presenters got their start on the show, including Valerie Singleton, Helen Skelton, Konnie Huq, Matt Baker, Gethin Jones and the late John Noakes.
Sarah Muller, BBC Senior Head of Children's Commissioning, added: "Leo is a natural storyteller whose creativity, positivity and sense of adventure make him a perfect fit for Blue Peter. His determination, passion for adventure and inspiring others reflects everything the programme stands for, and we're excited to welcome him to the team."
Last year saw Blue Peter move to a new studio in Manchester as part of a successful relaunch. The programme has generated more than 6.8 million streams on the BBC iPlayer, with over 340,000 children aged 5 to 15 holding at least one Blue Peter badge.
