Billie Eilish has described being a woman as 'just such a war, forever', especially for young women in the public eye. The 21-year-old singer, who won seven Grammys and an Oscar before she could legally drink, reflected on the 'really unfair' scrutiny she faced growing up in the spotlight.
Eilish, who shot to fame at 13 with the viral hit 'Ocean Eyes', recalled the 'weird and upsetting' questions about her relationships, sexuality and style. Despite the criticism, she looks back with pride but now recognises that her early happiness relied on external validation. 'I gotta find stuff within myself... that's going to bring me that much joy,' she said.
The star has since pushed herself creatively, earning Oscar buzz for her 'Barbie' song 'What Was I Made For?' and making her acting debut in the horror series 'Swarm', all while finishing her third studio album. 'I feel like I'm becoming a person I really love,' she added.
Eilish also discussed her changing relationship with womanhood, admitting she's been 'intimidated' by women but now feels deep connections with them. 'I'm physically attracted to them,' she said matter-of-factly, reflecting a generational shift in openness.
