The BBC has greenlit a six-part drama based on Henry James' 19th-century novel The Portrait of a Lady, with an ensemble cast led by Bill Nighy, Gemma Arterton, and Jim Sturgess.
Nell Tiger Free, known for Game of Thrones, stars as Isabel Archer, a “vivacious” young American who travels to Europe “keen to experience all that life has to offer.” The official description notes that Isabel rejects several marriage proposals but falls prey to two American ex-pat schemers after inheriting a fortune.

Bill Nighy portrays Mr. Touchett, who aids Isabel in her “quest for freedom.” Gemma Arterton plays the “elegant Madame Merle,” and Jim Sturgess plays the “charming but calculating Gilbert Osmond.” Miranda Richardson takes on the role of Isabel’s “fantastically eccentric aunt,” who brings her to Europe in search of a husband.

Filming is underway across the UK, Croatia, and Hungary, though an official release date has not been announced. The series will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
