Britain's Got Talent star Vinnie McKee has revealed he was placed in an induced coma after a severe nosebleed turned into a life-threatening medical emergency.
On Friday, July 24, the Glasgow-born singer and songwriter shared the update on Instagram and Facebook alongside photos of himself in intensive care. The images showed him attached to medical equipment, with a bloodied nose and wearing an oxygen mask alongside his family.
Ordeal began after London show
Vinnie, who reached the final of Britain's Got Talent last year after earning Simon Cowell's Golden Buzzer with his rendition of The Proclaimers' I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles), explained that the ordeal began after performing his headline show in London on Sunday.
In his social media post, he wrote: "I don't have much energy right now and I'm currently in intensive care, but I wanted to update you all as I've been quiet the past few days."
The singer said he suffered a severe nosebleed after his performance in London, which worsened the following day. Although he was initially treated and discharged from hospital, the bleeding returned while he was travelling back to Scotland.
Emergency surgery and induced coma
Vinnie was then taken to Warrington Hospital, where doctors discovered he had damaged an artery. After spending more than 24 hours in A&E and losing a significant amount of blood, the singer underwent emergency surgery.
He said: “After more than 24 hours in A&E and significant blood loss, I was taken into surgery. During the operation, I aspirated blood and became critically ill, leading to me being placed in an induced coma in intensive care.”
Fortunately, Vinnie revealed he has since regained consciousness and is now beginning his recovery. He told fans: "Thankfully, I woke up yesterday. I'm still very weak, but I'm in good hands and hoping to recover fully soon. Being able to hug my family again means everything."
Thanks to hospital staff
Vinnie also thanked the medical staff who cared for him. Ending the post, he wrote: "I can't thank the incredible staff at Warrington Hospital enough for saving my life, and I'm so grateful for all your messages and support. Love you all. Vinnie."
Fans quickly flooded the comments with messages of support. One comment read: "So sorry to hear this Vinnie! Sounds awful. Sending you big hugs and lots of love and a speedy recovery! Xxxx." While another stated: "Take care mate, hope you're on the road to recovery!"
