Ben Miller admits he 'really misses' Death in Paradise character

Death in Paradise star Ben Miller has admitted he “really misses” his character DI Richard Poole. The actor, 60, said he loved being part of the BBC crime drama.

Miller on a possible prequel

When asked about a prequel exploring his character, Miller told Radio Times: “If I wasn't so ruddy old, I could play him in a prequel! I loved the character and I loved the show. It just came at a slightly unfortunate time in my life.”

Miller chose to leave the Caribbean-set series after two series to protect his relationship. His character was killed off at the start of series three, though he later reprised the role for a special 10th anniversary episode.

Stories continue for Poole

Miller added: “But I do really miss that character. And funnily enough, Rob Thorogood [the Paraverse creator and writer] has carried on writing stories for Richard Poole, which is quite fun, so that's a nice way to relive the character again.”

Return to TV with Austin

Miller recently returned to screens in the new series of BBC comedy drama Austin. He plays Julian Hartswood, a celebrated children's author whose professional life is disrupted by a social media controversy. Sharing the news on Instagram, he said: “Hello there, I just wanted to let you know that season two of Austin is finally out on the BBC. It's on iPlayer, there it is. There we go, season two available on iPlayer right now!”

Fans responded positively, with one writing: “Absolutely brilliant series. Especially when I have the pleasure of working with adults with autism. It feels like a day at work. Thank you for highlighting this condition. Thank you.” Another added: “I have been patiently waiting for Austin series 2! Absolutely love it.” One viewer commented: “So glad to see you back on screens, miss you on Death in Paradise, you were the best detective.”

Death in Paradise can be streamed on BBC iPlayer.
