Richard E. Grant, the 65-year-old actor who recently co-hosted the BAFTA Film Awards, has shared a throwback photo on Instagram that has left fans stunned. The picture, taken 37 years ago when Grant was just 28, shows him in a long great coat and a red tartan scarf, holding a cigarette and what appears to be a snack.
Fans quickly flocked to the comments section, quoting lines from his 1987 film 'Withnail And I'. One user joked: 'You should warn us about releasing these archive pics so we can properly celebrate with the finest wine available to humanity!' Another added: 'Absolute perfection. That performance would receive an Oscar today.'
The throwback comes shortly after Grant's emotional hosting of the BAFTA Awards in February, where he struggled to hold back tears during the in memoriam segment. Introducing the tribute, he said: 'Let's take this opportunity to pay tribute to those members of the global film community that we sadly lost over the last 12 months.' His voice broke as he added: 'I'm sorry.'
Grant's wife, Joan Washington, a renowned voice coach, died in September 2021 after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. The couple had been married for 35 years and together for 38. Grant's tribute at the BAFTAs honoured industry figures including Dame Angela Lansbury and Robbie Coltrane.
