BBC Commemorates Aberfan Disaster with New Documentary 60 Years On
BBC Commemorates Aberfan Disaster 60 Years On

Sixty years after the tragic Aberfan disaster, BBC Specialist Factual and BBC Cymru Wales have commissioned a new documentary to commemorate the horrific event. Titled Aberfan: The People's Fight, the film will be produced by BBC Studios Specialist Factual Productions for BBC Two, BBC One Wales, and BBC iPlayer.

The Disaster

On October 21, 1966, at 9:13 am, a mountain of coal spoil collapsed onto the small mining village of Aberfan near Merthyr Tydfil. The landslide destroyed 18 houses, Pant Glas Junior School, and part of the neighbouring County Secondary School. It claimed 144 lives, including 116 children, in what remains one of the UK's worst mining disasters.

Community Voices

The documentary will feature survivors, bereaved parents, and relatives who led the campaign to remove the remaining tips. They recount how, during their darkest moments, the community challenged the National Coal Board and the government. Nick Andrews, head of commissioning for BBC Cymru Wales, said: 'The story of Aberfan is not only about unimaginable loss, but about the strength and determination of a community in the aftermath. For one of the first times, this documentary gives space to those voices and reflects the courage shown in the fight for justice.'

Jack Bootle, head of commissioning for Specialist Factual, added: 'Aberfan: The People's Fight tells the story of a community whose determination to secure justice endured long after the disaster itself. Showing how history echoes through generations, leaving legacies that are felt not just in our institutions and politics, but in people's everyday lives. This is a thoughtful film that reflects the BBC's commitment to telling stories that help us better understand our country and the world around us.'

Commemorative Season

To mark the 60th anniversary, BBC Cymru Wales has commissioned a season of content across television, radio, news, and online services. The documentary is set to air later this year as part of this commemorative season.
