BBC Breakfast was interrupted for two devastating announcements just minutes into Monday's show. Presenters Jon Kay and Sally Nugent delivered the tragic reports on July 27.
Seattle food festival shooting
Jon Kay reported that two people had been killed and at least five more injured in a shooting at Seattle's annual food festival, Bite of Seattle. He said: "Two people have been killed and at least five more have been injured after a shooting at a food festival in Seattle."
He added: "Among the injured is a two-year-old boy after gun shots were heard at the Seattle centre at around six o'clock local time last night. The city's mayor says one person has been taken into custody."
Assistant chief of Seattle Police Tyrone Davis later confirmed that the shooting resulted in three deaths. Two died at the scene, and a third victim died from injuries after being taken to Harborview Medical Center. Among those hospitalised are a two-year-old boy, a 39-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man, all in stable condition. Mayor Katie Wilson said one suspect had been arrested, and police confirmed they were hunting for a second suspect.
Derby car crash
Moments later, Jon Kay delivered another tragic announcement. He said: "Four people, including a baby girl, have died following a collision off a dual carriageway in Derby on Saturday night. Derbyshire police said the car left the A38 and crashed into trees around 11 o'clock in the evening."
He continued: "The driver, a 33-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving."
Derbyshire Police said two women, aged 18 and 30, and a 36-year-old man were declared dead at the scene. The baby girl was taken to hospital but pronounced dead shortly after.
