BBC Breakfast host 'feeling tense' in awkward interview

BBC Breakfast host Charlie Stayt was left feeling 'tense' during an interview with comedian Lucy Beaumont that viewers described as 'awkward' and 'cringeworthy'. The segment aired on Friday, July 17, 2026, during the morning programme presented by Stayt and co-host Naga Munchetty.

Interview Takes Awkward Turn

Lucy Beaumont, 42, appeared on the show to promote her new stand-up show inspired by her poor performance in quizzes. The interview quickly turned uncomfortable when hosts Charlie and Naga questioned her about her infamous quiz show blunders. Beaumont is known for a memorable appearance on Michael McIntyre's The Wheel in 2024, where her incorrect advice cost a contestant £98,000. She also made headlines on Celebrity Mastermind, where she made no effort to answer questions in her specialist subject, resulting in one of the lowest general knowledge rounds recorded.

During the interview, Naga turned to Charlie and remarked: 'I've worked next to this man for a very long time and I can feel you getting tense because you hate quizzes like this and I think he sympathises with you.' Referring to a clip of her Celebrity Mastermind shown on air, Beaumont said: 'Whenever I do publicity, they always show that clip - it's torture for me.' Naga apologised, but Beaumont replied: 'No it's alright. I've got over it now. It's fine, it's fine.'

The awkwardness escalated when Beaumont began questioning Charlie on his general knowledge. Charlie admitted: 'Now you're making me feel tense now because you're doing the thing people do to you. You're looking at me, asking me questions and I'm thinking "look at someone else."' Viewers at home took to social media to express their discomfort. One wrote: 'I find car crash interviews like this so awkward to watch. ##bbcbreakfast.' Another said: 'This is a tad awkward. Not sure I'd call this "humour" ....#bbcbreakfast.' A third commented: 'Awkward interview... #BBCBreakfast.' Another added: 'That must have been the most awkward interview I've seen for a while.' One viewer noted: '#bbcbreakfast what an awkward interview. You could see Naga cringing.' Another said: 'What is this interview/promo with Lucy Beaumont? It's cringeworthy. #bbcbreakfast.'
