Charles Augins, the actor best known for playing the villain Queeg in the BBC sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf, has died at the age of 81. His death on July 19 was announced by his friend Courtney Baker Oliver on Instagram.
Augins appeared in the second series of Red Dwarf as Queeg, a character who takes control of the spaceship. He also choreographed the iconic 'Tongue Tied' dance performed by Craig Charles, Chris Barrie and Danny John-Jules in the same series.
Born in Virginia, USA, in 1943, Augins enjoyed a varied career as an actor, dancer and choreographer. His other television credits included Labyrinth, Smith & Jones, Capital City and Blake's 7. He also worked extensively in musical theatre.
Augins won the Olivier Award, the NAACP Award and the L.A. Theatre Ovation Award for Best Choreographer. He was also honoured with the Living Legend Award for the Performing Arts for his teaching.
Tributes from fans praised his performance as Queeg, with one describing him as 'the best ever Red Dwarf villain'. Another noted that his performance was 'one of the best in the entire run'.
