Florida-based surgeon Dr Rian Maercks described this trend as characterised by a 'proud' lower lip or natural smirk, with clients frequently bringing reference images of celebrities like Brad Pitt, Channing Tatum, Harry Styles, and Henry Cavill. "Social media, dating apps, selfie culture... that culture has a big part of it," Dr Maercks explained, noting that even politicians now embody and celebrate narcissism, encouraging greater facial analysis.
Statistics Confirm Growing Male Participation
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported a four percent rise in male cosmetic surgeries since 2022, with 1.6 million procedures performed on men last year alone. Cosmetic surgeon Dr Jamie Aphlett identified jawline enhancement using dermal fillers as one of the most requested treatments among male clients.
"A sharp, defined jawline has become a hallmark of masculinity," Dr Aphlett stated, "with celebrities like Henry Cavill and Shawn Mendes often cited as reference points in my clinic. In recent years, there has also been a growing demand for subtle lip enhancements, a trend that might surprise many."
Changing Attitudes Toward Male Aesthetics
Experts note a significant shift in how men approach cosmetic treatments compared to women. When it comes to lip fillers specifically, most men seek balance, hydration, and subtle structure that feels masculine yet natural rather than dramatic volume increases.
Dr Paul Banwell, an aesthetics specialist, emphasised the importance of comprehensive facial assessment. "In men particularly, the lip is rarely an isolated concern," he explained. "Patients may feel that the lips look thinner or less defined, but this is often part of wider changes involving skin quality, dental show, jawline support and perioral ageing. Focusing on one feature in isolation can sometimes lead to imbalance."
Cultural Stigma Gradually Diminishing
While the cultural stigma around men undergoing cosmetic surgery has decreased significantly since 2017, Dr Jamie Aphlett believes more progress is needed. "The outdated perception that aesthetic treatments are only for women is gradually shifting," he said, "but more awareness is required to make men feel comfortable seeking treatments without judgement."
As social media continues to highlight male self-care and aesthetics, experts predict even more men will embrace injectables as part of their grooming routines. This trend emerges even as some female celebrities, including Kylie Jenner, Molly Mae Hague, and Ariana Grande, have reportedly dissolved their fillers in favour of more natural appearances.
