A Scottish oil rig worker has traded in his hard hat for an apron after being announced as a contestant on The Great British Bake Off 2025. Iain Ross from Aberdeenshire is among the fresh batch of bakers hoping to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith in the famous tent.
The 42-year-old former offshore worker has revealed his baking journey began as a therapeutic escape from the gruelling demands of his previous career. "Baking became my sanctuary," Ross explained. "After long, stressful rotations on the rigs, I found incredible comfort in the precise science and creative joy of making bread and pastries."
From North Sea Rig to Baking Brilliance
Ross's transition from the harsh environment of oil rigs to the warmth of the baking kitchen represents one of the most dramatic career changes in Bake Off history. His background in engineering has given him a unique approach to the technical challenges of baking.
"Working offshore teaches you precision, timing, and how to perform under pressure - skills that translate surprisingly well to the Bake Off tent," Ross shared during his introductory interview.
A Family Tradition of Baking
The Scottish contestant credits his grandmother for inspiring his love of baking. Her traditional recipes and techniques form the foundation of his baking style, which he has combined with modern innovations.
"My granny would be over the moon seeing me in that tent," Ross said emotionally. "She taught me everything about traditional Scottish baking, from shortbread to black bun. I hope to make her proud."
What to Expect from the 2025 Series
The new series of Bake Off promises to deliver the same heartwarming combination of baking brilliance and charming contestant stories that has made the show a national treasure. With Iain Ross's compelling backstory and technical background, he's already emerging as one to watch.
Fans can expect to see how his engineering precision and North Sea resilience will translate into showstopper bakes and technical challenges when the new series airs on Channel 4 later this year.
