Mother Espresso, an award-winning café on Wood Street in Liverpool, has closed its doors after eight years of operation. The venue opened on the ground floor of the Tea Factory building in 2018 and became a fixture of the city's coffee scene, serving specialty coffee and a range of breakfast and brunch items.
Award-winning history
Over its eight years, Mother Espresso won several awards and was named "the most creative coffee shop" by The Grounds of Innovation Awards in 2024. The café was opened by Wayne Lew and Jane Spindler, who expressed their delight at the recognition at the time.
Wayne told the ECHO in 2024: "Jane and I are absolutely thrilled to receive the Innovation award. It’s a huge honour to be recognised for our work, and it's a testament to the dedication and hard work of our team. This award inspires us to continue pushing the boundaries of innovation and making a positive impact."
Closure announcement
A message shared on the café's Instagram Story last week said: "Just a sad reminder that our last day of trade will be Sunday. If anyone is interested in purchasing equipment, crockery, furniture, please DM us." The ECHO visited today and found the frontage had been removed and shutters were down in the interior of the building.
ECHO reporter Christopher Megrath visited the Wood Street café off the back of the award win and praised the coffee shop in a review, describing it as "effortlessly cool" with a "relaxing ambience" and a "community setting." The ECHO has contacted Mother Espresso with regards to the closure.
